Tuesday January 24, 2017 meeting @ Huntington Public Library

LAPC MEETING
Tuesday, January 24, 2017
Location: Huntington Public Library

Report from: Mattituck-Laurel Library
Karen Letteriello, Youth and Parenting Services

Smart Table:
With funds from a grant the Library purchased a 42” Smart Table model 422i from Tequipment Incorporated.  The Smart Table is located directly inside the Youth and Parenting Department. It gets significant daily use. We update the Smart Table each month with seasonal themed activities. The Smart Table is enjoyed by every age group. Adults often stop in to play with their children or grandchildren.
We must keep an eye on the table use as only fingertips are permitted.  Often we are asking parents to keep their children from using anything other than fingertips.  While a parent was standing at the table their child scratched a toy across and left a large scratch.  Although the table is useable, I have called for a cost to have the top resurfaced.

Programs:
Kathy Roeder has active Baby Games, Toddler Games and Preschool Games programs.  Programs are similar.  We had Kathy come on November 9th for the Baby and Toddler Games.  Our sign up was low for the baby program.  When a staff member went down to check on the program, both Kathy and the two moms were in tears.  It seems they were discussing the election results.  My staff member alerted me.  After the baby program I explained to Kathy that she is here for a program and nothing political.  As a public library we must serve all.  Kathy apologized and did not discuss the election results during the toddler program.  I enjoy Kathy’s programs however will be more conscience of having any programmer after an election.

New to our collection:
We have redesigned our parenting collection.  Along the top shelf we have parenting picture books.  The spine labels of these books sport a green P and directly below PF followed by a Dewey number and then three letters of the author’s name.  This system helps not only the staff but the patron locate book within certain topics.

Emily Grace and the What Ifs by Lisa B. Gehring.  This picture book is a story about Nighttime Fears.  At the back of this book is a two page spread of notes to parents.  ISBN: 9781433821066

Princess Penelopea Hates Peas by Susan D. Sweet.  This picture book is a story about a picky eater.  At the back of the book is a two page spread of notes to parents.  ISBN: 9781433820465

Breaking the Trance by George T. Lynn.  This is a guide for parents on how to break the screen dependent child.  ISBN: 9781942094265

The Parent’s Guide to Down Syndrome by Jen Jacobs and Mardra Sikora

 ISBN: 9781440592904
