Tuesday January 24, 2017 meeting @ Huntington Public Library

LAPC MEETING
Tuesday, January 24, 2017
Location: Huntington Public Library

Report from: Mattituck-Laurel Library
Karen Letteriello, Youth and Parenting Services

Smart Table:
With funds from a grant the Library purchased a 42” Smart Table model 422i from Tequipment Incorporated.  The Smart Table is located directly inside the Youth and Parenting Department. It gets significant daily use. We update the Smart Table each month with seasonal themed activities. The Smart Table is enjoyed by every age group. Adults often stop in to play with their children or grandchildren.
We must keep an eye on the table use as only fingertips are permitted.  Often we are asking parents to keep their children from using anything other than fingertips.  While a parent was standing at the table their child scratched a toy across and left a large scratch.  Although the table is useable, I have called for a cost to have the top resurfaced.

Programs:
Kathy Roeder has active Baby Games, Toddler Games and Preschool Games programs.  Programs are similar.  We had Kathy come on November 9th for the Baby and Toddler Games.  Our sign up was low for the baby program.  When a staff member went down to check on the program, both Kathy and the two moms were in tears.  It seems they were discussing the election results.  My staff member alerted me.  After the baby program I explained to Kathy that she is here for a program and nothing political.  As a public library we must serve all.  Kathy apologized and did not discuss the election results during the toddler program.  I enjoy Kathy’s programs however will be more conscience of having any programmer after an election.

New to our collection:
We have redesigned our parenting collection.  Along the top shelf we have parenting picture books.  The spine labels of these books sport a green P and directly below PF followed by a Dewey number and then three letters of the author’s name.  This system helps not only the staff but the patron locate book within certain topics.

Emily Grace and the What Ifs by Lisa B. Gehring.  This picture book is a story about Nighttime Fears.  At the back of this book is a two page spread of notes to parents.  ISBN: 9781433821066

Princess Penelopea Hates Peas by Susan D. Sweet.  This picture book is a story about a picky eater.  At the back of the book is a two page spread of notes to parents.  ISBN: 9781433820465

Breaking the Trance by George T. Lynn.  This is a guide for parents on how to break the screen dependent child.  ISBN: 9781942094265

The Parent’s Guide to Down Syndrome by Jen Jacobs and Mardra Sikora

 ISBN: 9781440592904

October 13, 2016 Meeting @ West Islip

Sorry for the delay, but here is your update from the October 13, 2016 meeting held at West Islip.

  • We spoke about maybe replacing the blog with a LAPC Facebook Page. Issues arose with using personal accounts as members, and how admins for the page would be "deleted" after they had left. It was decided to give the blog another go, to see if it is worthwhile keeping up to date.
  • For the blog- we need to figure out another way to display the books that were discussed at the meeting. Our old service no longer works. Good Reads was a suggestion. We also spoke about trying to create a "resource" tab on the blog, for all resource professional information to be listed there for easy access.
  • 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, as always, was a topic of discussion. Creating special collections of books, how to store those books, and what was given as incentives (and when) were discussed. Middle Country Library uses backpacks, each filled with 10 books, for their program. Other libraries have used plastic (clear) bags with 10 books in them for theirs. Each bag is themed and numbered. Some statistics are collected for each individual book at certain libraries, and others just count the set as one stat. We talked about celebrations for those who complete, as well as participation numbers. Middle Country uses Positive Promotions "medals" for completion, and Brookhaven holds one big event every year for all participants, where those who complete the program get their certificates and t-shirts.
  • We also talked a little bit about Maker space/Creative spaces that are popping up and being developed in our libraries. East Islip talked about their new Backyard that has just opened.
  • Middle Country talked about their Tiny Tot prom. Kids dressed up and came to the library.
  • Kerri Kreh Reda from Cornell Cooperative Extension spoke to us about the services and programs offered through Cornell. You can find many of those resources online at www.ccesuffolk.org. Classes/programs range from early childhood to "Parent University."
